2006 Dayton NAACP Election

President Baine's Letter of Thanks

Dear Supporters:

Season greetings. I want to say thank you for making our fifty-fifth Freedom Fund Banquet a success. Know that your support helps fund a branch of the oldest and strongest civil rights organization in our county. We look forward to your continued support.

The election of branch officers and executive committee members is over. We look forward to President-elect Mr. Derrick Foward, the new officers, and new executive committee members taking us to higher heights. Mr. Foward brings years of experience and energy to this office. And the supporting officers and executive committee members have decades of service among them. We are in good hands.

It has been a labor of love to give leadership to our branch. Because of teamwork, we are able to cite the following accomplishments:

  • We responded to over 600 complaints of discrimination.
  • We successfully lobbied against our local government fund being cut, lobbied for stronger predatory lending legislation, lobbied for the extension of clauses in the Voting Rights Act, lobbied for the increase of the minimum wage, and played a key role in voter registration and "getting out to vote."
  • We played a major role in raising over $20,000 for Hurricane Katrina relief.

  • We gave diligence to monitoring the desegregation settlement with the Dayton Public Schools, implemented the Miley O. Williamson scholarship, and implemented a reading and adopt-a-school challenge.
  • We supported the Dayton Urban League’s Young Professional’s financial seminars and hosted several seminars on predatory lending, reverse mortgages, and local housing opportunities.
  • We restored order to our monthly Membership Meetings, invested in the training of our officers, added over $20,000 to our end of administration account balance (i.e., over a 50% increase in end of administration balance), had a smooth election, and will have a smooth transition between the administrations.

Both the Macedonia Church and Macedonia Community Development Corporation have laid claims on my attention and energy, in 2007. However, as both an outgoing president and a life member, I remind us that the NAACP is a membership organization. It will only be as strong as its members make it. Please join a committee, recruit new members to the branch, and support the 2007 Freedom Fund Banquet.

Sincerely yours,

Dr. Robert E. Baines, Jr.
President, Dayton Branch NAACP
