Local community, church groups
welcome
The genocide in Darfur, Sudan,
and what the international community and individuals can do
about it will be the topic of an afternoon presentation on
Wednesday, April 18, by veteran journalist and former ABC-TV
anchor Nick Clooney. The program will begin at 2 p.m. at
Salem Heights, the motherhouse of the Sisters of the
Precious Blood, in Dayton.
Clooney and his son,
actor/director George Clooney, visited the region recently
and have chronicled their on-site coverage of the crisis,
which involves the forced displacement, starvation, killing
and rape of thousands of Sudanese civilians. It has been
called the greatest man-made crisis of our day. Since their
return, Nick Clooney has been promoting awareness of the
situation in the tri-state area and informing the public on
what can be done to encouragement government leadership to
help.
"The Crisis in Darfur" is part
of the Salem Seminars hosted by the Sisters of the Precious
Blood. It is free and open to the public. A free-will
offering will be taken to assist the people of Darfur; the
Sisters of the Precious Blood have made a commitment to
match donations up to $5,000. A question-and-answer period
will follow Mr. Clooney’s presentation. Light refreshments
will be available after the program.
Groups are welcome. If your
church or organization is planning to have a number of
persons attending, please phone by Monday, April 16, with a
tentative count to facilitate seating arrangements.
Salem Heights, which is
fully handicapped-accessible, is located at 4960 Salem
